THE PROCESS OF WHOLE PERSON CARE:
An Interactive Session Using Standardized Patients

Organizers and Chair: TOM A. HUTCHINSON, McGill Programs in Whole Person Care, Montréal, QC

Whole person care is a new medical paradigm that combines the cure of disease and the facilitation of healing in a seamless process of care that changes as the illness progresses. We will explore the moment-to-moment dynamics of whole person care throughout the illness trajectory from diagnosis to final outcome using short didactic sessions, simulated interviews with actors in small groups, debriefings, small group discussions and large group review.

MASTER CLASS:
Clinical Management of Advanced Neurodegenerative Diseases
Organizers and Co-Chairs: ROMAYNE GALLAGHER, Hospice Palliative Care Program, Providence Health Care, Vancouver, BC and
DAVID HENDERSON, Colchester-East Hants Palliative Care Program, Truro, NS

(Seminar in English with simultaneous interpretation into French.)

Although cancer has been the predominant diagnosis seen by Palliative Care providers, Dame Cicely Saunders, founder of the Hospice movement, had always intended for people with all terminal diagnoses to have access to hospice care. In response to the increasing proportion of non-malignant diagnoses in programs worldwide, we will explore the palliative approach to the challenges of neurodegenerative and psychiatric conditions and related symptom management issues.
Organized in collaboration with the Canadian Society for Palliative Care Physicians

FOCUS ON THE NURSING EXPERIENCE:
Bridging Humanism and Professionalism
Organizers and Co-Chairs: MARYSE BOUVETTE, Bruyère Continuing Care, Ottawa, ON and VASILIKI BITZAS, Jewish General Hospital, Montréal, QC

(Seminar wil be bilingual with simultaneous interpretation.)

An opportunity for Palliative Care nurses and other caregivers to examine how their work impacts their being as a person and vice versa. What does it mean to work with the dying? How do we support ourselves and each other? How can we recognize the "warning signs" which indicate that stressors need to be addressed?
